Peak flights occur from mid June to mid July.
Similar to Spilosoma congrua, but virginica has yellow on the abdomen, which is absent in S. congrua and S. dubia has more black markings on the forewing.

Widespread throughout most of North America, north to the Athabasca Sand Dunes in northern Alberta.
