Any mountainous aquatic habitat.

Adults fly from mid-August to October and May.

Adult wings are usually brownish with darker markings, but some adults can be midnight-black, grey, orange with pink and other markings. In males, the maxillary palpi are 3-articled and 5-articled in females. The fore tibia has only one spur or sometimes, none. There are ocelli present.

Larvae are detritovores.

A large and widely distributed group, however most species are northern or western in distribution (Borror & White, 1981).
