Generally occur at higher elevations in ponds and small lakes (Wiggins, 1996).
Adults are large and heavily patterned with deep reddish brown.
Larvae feed primarily on detritus and bottom sediments (Wiggins, 1996).
This genus is found only in North America (Wiggins, 1996).
