scientific name    Nicrophorus carolinus

In this species the anterior transverse impression found on the pronotum of other Nicrophorus is absent. Also, the side margins of the pronotum are extremely narrow and there is a fine bead along the edge of the basal margin. The antennal club is entirely red, with the last segment short and squat. The metatibiae are strongly curved.

This species occurs across the southern U.S. to Arizona and north into the Great Plains. In Alberta carolinus has been taken only in the extreme south of the province.

Meaning of name: "pertaining to Carolina; Carolinan." It refers to the source of the original specimen(s), Carolina, United States.
