identification
The combination of the yellow hindwing and a white forewing in the males is unique. Females have white hindwings, and are somewhat similar to Hypercompe permaculata. Estigmene acrea females can however be distinguished by the white thorax and they are slightly larger in size.

We had two of these as late instar caterpillars eating large holes in an ornamental Bergenia. Larval host range is available - apparently mostly broadleafed weedy plants and crops and they can do significant damage. University of Florida has a good website at: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/IN375
